Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has disclosed that security forces received credible intelligence three days before the terrorist attack on the 15 Task Force Brigade in Benisheikh, yet the assault still went ahead, exposing serious gaps in response and preparedness.
Speaking during a condolence visit to Benisheikh on Saturday, Zulum described the incident as deeply disturbing, noting that the advance warning should have triggered stronger preventive action. The attack, carried out in the early hours of Friday, killed Brigade Commander Brigadier General O.O. Braimoh, several soldiers, and civilians, while also striking parts of the town.
The governor questioned local officials during his visit, and the council chairman confirmed that intelligence reports had indeed been received before the raid. Zulum said the lapse demands an urgent reassessment of military strategy and stronger coordination in handling threat alerts.
Benisheikh, a strategic town on the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway and a major military hub in the anti-insurgency campaign, has long remained vulnerable to Boko Haram attacks despite years of military pressure on insurgent groups.
Reaffirming support for security agencies, Zulum pledged continued backing for troops, local vigilantes, and community defence efforts, stressing that stronger vigilance is needed to keep Benisheikh from falling into insurgent hands.
