Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has returned to Kebbi State after 123 days marked by detention and political uncertainty, drawing huge crowds of supporters in a dramatic homecoming that has energized the African Democratic Congress in the state.
Malami was detained on December 8, 2025, after responding to an invitation from the EFCC, and remained in custody for 99 days before being granted bail on March 22, 2026. After spending an additional 19 days in Abuja, he finally arrived in Kebbi to a large public reception, with thousands lining roads, waving party flags, and celebrating his return.
The turnout, described as one of the biggest political gatherings in recent Kebbi history, is being seen as a major boost for the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections. Supporters view Malami as a central opposition figure and a possible contender in the next gubernatorial race.
His return has intensified political speculation in Kebbi, with analysts suggesting that his popularity could reshape the state’s political landscape and create stronger competition against the ruling APC.
