The Federal Government has inaugurated a new maritime institute at the University of Lagos to strengthen Nigeria’s blue economy and build skilled manpower for the sector.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, commissioned the facility, describing it as a major step toward expanding capacity in maritime education, research, and innovation.

The institute, funded by Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, is equipped with modern classrooms and specialised training facilities to support industry-focused learning.

The government noted that the maritime sector accounts for over 90% of Nigeria’s trade, making it critical for economic diversification and job creation.

Officials also highlighted ongoing training efforts under the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme, with thousands of Nigerians already trained both locally and internationally.

The initiative is expected to boost research, develop industry-ready professionals, and position Nigeria as a competitive maritime hub in Africa.
