Police in Edo State have initiated an intensive search-and-rescue operation after gunmen attacked a commercial bus along the Lagos–Benin Expressway, killing the driver and abducting passengers.

According to the spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, authorities have ordered a coordinated rescue effort covering the Ore–Benin axis and nearby forest areas.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Monday Agbonika, directed area commanders to intensify search operations within their jurisdictions, while operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit have been deployed to support the mission.

Police tactical teams are working alongside local hunters and vigilante groups to comb surrounding forests in a bid to rescue the victims and apprehend those responsible.

Police reports indicate that the attackers opened fire on the vehicle, killing the driver instantly. A female passenger who sustained gunshot injuries was rescued and taken to a hospital, where she is currently in stable condition.

Three other passengers were abducted and taken into a nearby forest during the incident, which occurred around 6:00 p.m. on Saturday within the Iguobazuwa axis of the highway.

At the time of the attack, five passengers were said to have fled into the bush.

Authorities have reassured residents of their commitment to securing the safe release of the abducted victims and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

The passengers were reportedly travelling from Lagos State to the eastern part of the country when the attack occurred.

A video of the incident has circulated online, showing claims that the assailants ambushed the vehicle, killed the driver, and dragged passengers into the bush, sparking public outrage and calls for stronger security action.
