Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique has expressed uncertainty over whether midfielder Vitinha will be fit for their Champions League semi-final clash against Bayern Munich.
The Portuguese midfielder is set to miss PSG’s Ligue 1 match against FC Nantes on Wednesday due to a heel inflammation.
Luis Enrique said the club would take a cautious approach in managing injured players, adding that he could not confirm Vitinha’s availability for next Tuesday’s first-leg encounter at the Parc des Princes.
He noted that the midfielder’s injury is minor but requires careful handling, while also acknowledging that some players are dealing with fatigue and minor knocks.
If Vitinha is unavailable, Fabián Ruiz could step in to fill the role in midfield. Alongside Vitinha and João Neves, Ruiz was part of the trio that played a key role in PSG’s successful campaign last season, where they secured both the Champions League and Ligue 1 titles.
Ruiz recently returned from a knee injury, featuring for the final 18 minutes in PSG’s 2-1 home defeat to Olympique Lyonnais. However, Luis Enrique stressed that the 30-year-old still needs time to regain full fitness after spending three months out.
The coach said he was pleased with Ruiz’s return but maintained that more match time would be necessary for full recovery.
Luis Enrique also emphasised that, despite PSG’s push to replicate last season’s double success, he expects higher performance levels from his players.
Teenage forward Ibrahim Mbaye was not included in the squad for the defeat to Lyon. The coach explained that while Mbaye had been ready, he expects more from all players given the standards required at the club.
A win against Nantes would move PSG three points ahead of RC Lens, with five matches remaining in the Ligue 1 season.
