Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Xavi Simons will miss the World Cup after suffering an ACL injury that requires surgery.

The midfielder picked up the injury during a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers and was forced off in the second half.

The club said Simons will undergo surgery soon before beginning rehabilitation, bringing his season to an early end.

The 23-year-old expressed disappointment over missing both the remainder of the season and the World Cup, where he had been expected to play a key role for the Netherlands under Ronald Koeman.

His absence is also a setback for Tottenham, who remain in a relegation battle in the Premier League.
