The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has gained a major political boost with the formal defection of Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani, the 2023 Adamawa State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
Her move comes just months after she exited the APC for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), highlighting a growing trend of political repositioning across the country.
The NDC described her entry as a key development in Nigeria’s shifting political landscape.
Binani was officially welcomed into the party in Abuja by its National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside National Chairman Moses Cleopas and members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
Speaking at the event, Binani said her decision was driven by the party’s constitution and governance philosophy.
“The answer is very simple. Going by the constitution of the NDC, I saw that the party focuses on structured, policy-driven governance,” she stated.
She explained that her move was also influenced by her supporters, many of whom had already aligned with the party before her formal defection
.“My priority and my first interest is the interest of my supporters,” she said, adding that Adamawa State now ranks among those with the highest number of registered NDC members.
Expressing appreciation for her reception, she pledged to strengthen the party both in Adamawa and across the country.
“We will try our best to see that we build this NDC back at home in Adamawa State, and also at the national level, we will contribute our quota,” she said.
She also emphasised the need for fairness, transparency, and internal democracy within the party.
Welcoming her, former Bayelsa State Governor and NDC National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, described the party as inclusive and open to Nigerians seeking alternative political platforms.
“This party is open, inclusive, and ready to harness your energy, ideas, and strength,” Dickson said, as he handed her a leadership role in Adamawa State.
He urged her to collaborate with party stakeholders to strengthen its structure and unity, while also calling on women and youths nationwide to join, noting that the party has adopted affirmative action policies to boost their participation.
“Every Nigerian has the constitutional right to join any political party at any time—and to leave at any time,” he said.
Using an analogy, he added, “If the vehicle you boarded is no longer taking you to your destination, you have every right to step down and board a better one. The NDC is that better vehicle.”
Binani remains a prominent political figure in Adamawa State and northern Nigeria, having mounted a strong challenge against incumbent Governor Ahmadu Fintiri in the 2023 election.
Her defection is expected to significantly reshape political alignments in Adamawa State as the 2027 elections approach, while also boosting the NDC’s efforts to position itself as a credible national alternative.
