The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has introduced sweeping rule changes ahead of the 99th Academy Awards in 2027, targeting the growing influence of artificial intelligence, acting nominations, and international film eligibility.

Under the new rules, actors can now receive multiple nominations within the same category if more than one of their performances ranks among the top five—an adjustment aimed at recognising exceptional output in a single year.

The Academy also reinforced its stance on creative authorship, stating that only human-written screenplays will qualify for awards. While the use of generative AI is not outright banned, it will be closely monitored, and filmmakers may be required to disclose how such tools were used.

In acting categories, eligibility is now limited strictly to performances delivered by human actors with proper consent and official film credits, addressing concerns around digital likeness and AI-generated performances.

For international films, eligibility has been broadened significantly. Multiple entries from the same country can now qualify, and films may gain entry through recognition at major global festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Sundance, Busan, and Toronto—opening the door to a wider range of global storytelling.

Additional updates include changes to how films are credited (shifting focus from countries to the films themselves), an increase in casting award statuettes, and stricter participation requirements for voters in technical categories.

Overall, the reforms reflect the Academy’s effort to balance innovation in filmmaking with clear boundaries around human creativity and artistic integrity.
