The governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, has temporarily stepped down from office following allegations by the United States linking him to the powerful Sinaloa Cartel.

Rocha announced he would step aside to allow a local investigation to proceed without interference, maintaining his innocence and insisting he has remained loyal to his people.

The allegations stem from a U.S. indictment that names Rocha alongside other current and former officials, accusing them of facilitating drug trafficking operations into the United States. Rocha has strongly denied the claims, describing them as politically motivated and an attack on his movement within the ruling party.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded cautiously, stating that any extradition requests tied to the case would only be considered upon the presentation of “clear and credible evidence.

”The case has intensified longstanding tensions between Mexico and the United States over issues of sovereignty, security cooperation, and the fight against organised crime. Washington has continued to push for tougher action against cartels, while Mexico has often resisted what it views as external pressure on its internal affairs.

Meanwhile, Sinaloa’s state legislature has appointed an interim governor to ensure continuity of governance during Rocha’s absence.

The development adds to ongoing concerns about alleged links between political figures and criminal organisations in Mexico, a challenge that continues to complicate efforts to combat cartel influence across the country.
