Iran has threatened to target United States forces if they enter the Strait of Hormuz, following an announcement by Donald Trump to assist stranded vessels.

Around 20,000 seafarers aboard roughly 2,000 ships have been trapped in the strait since clashes between the US and Iran began in February, according to a United Nations agency.

Trump said US forces would begin guiding ships from Monday, describing the effort as humanitarian, noting that many vessels are running low on essential supplies.

Iran’s military asserted control over the waterway and warned it would respond to any foreign armed presence, specifically cautioning against US forces entering the area.

The development raises concerns over a possible escalation that could undermine a ceasefire that has held for weeks.

Reports indicate the US operation may involve advisory support for commercial ships rather than direct naval escort, with forces positioned nearby to deter attacks.

Meanwhile, Pakistan said 22 crew members from an Iranian vessel seized by the US would be returned to Iranian authorities.
