Nigeria has begun arrangements to bring back its citizens from South Africa who are willing to return, following renewed fears over attacks on foreign nationals.

Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu said more than 130 Nigerians have already registered for voluntary evacuation, with numbers expected to increase.

She said the move is aimed at protecting Nigerians as anti-immigrant tensions continue to rise.

President Bola Tinubu has condemned the violence and protests marked by xenophobic rhetoric, stressing that Nigerians and their businesses should not be exposed to harm.

Nigeria has also summoned South Africa’s acting High Commissioner to formally express concern over recent incidents, including attacks and destruction of Nigerian-owned businesses.

The government is compiling a register of Nigerians in South Africa and planning evacuation flights for those who choose to return.

Officials cited cases involving the deaths of two Nigerians, while reports also indicate that other African nationals, including Ethiopians, have been affected.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned the attacks and urged foreign nationals to follow local laws, while recalling support from other African countries during the anti-apartheid era.

Despite this, anti-immigrant groups have intensified activities, with reports of individuals being stopped to present identification and businesses closing amid fears of violence.

The situation has also drawn reactions from other countries, including Ghana, which raised concerns after incidents involving its citizens.
