Umo Eno has said the first international flight from Victor Attah International Airport to Accra will help position Akwa Ibom State as a tourism hub for West, Central and Southern Africa.

Speaking after returning to Uyo from Accra, the governor said the state is building a sustainable tourism-driven economy through strategic expansion in aviation.

He noted that the Accra route and future connections to other destinations will strengthen the state’s appeal as a preferred destination.

The governor added that the state is developing human capacity to support the aviation and tourism sector, revealing that 20 pilots and 20 engineers have been trained, with 10 more currently studying at Ethiopian Aviation University.

He said these efforts are aimed at building long-term capacity not only for Ibom Air but for the wider aviation ecosystem.

Umo Eno also highlighted infrastructure developments within the aviation sector, stating that about 10 projects have been completed, including a new terminal hub, second runway, apron, aviation village, hospital, security systems, and perimeter fencing.

He described the airport terminal as one of the best globally, noting comparisons to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.

He said the developments reflect the state’s commitment to building a strong tourism and aviation ecosystem.
