Former Nigerian leader Goodluck Jonathan has expressed renewed optimism about the country’s future, urging citizens and leaders to remain patient despite ongoing economic and security challenges.

Speaking at a church gathering in Abuja, Jonathan acknowledged the nation’s struggles—from rising insecurity to social and moral decline—but maintained that Nigeria has the capacity to recover through disciplined leadership and collective commitment.

He highlighted the stabilising role of religious institutions, noting that the church continues to provide moral direction during uncertain times. At the same event, the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) raised concerns about increasing political distractions ahead of the 2027 elections.

Church leaders cautioned politicians against prioritising power struggles and early campaign manoeuvres over governance, warning that such actions risk worsening the country’s already fragile situation. They also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to remain neutral and uphold transparency in future electoral processes.

While acknowledging slight improvements in macroeconomic indicators under Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, the church stressed that many Nigerians are yet to feel the benefits, with poverty and inflation still heavily impacting daily life.

Jonathan, drawing comparisons with countries like Singapore, emphasised that meaningful national transformation takes decades of consistent policy direction, urging leaders to stay focused on long-term development rather than short-term political gains.

Overall, both Jonathan and the church delivered a unified message: Nigeria can overcome its challenges—but only through responsible leadership, patience, and a shift away from premature political calculations.
