Nigeria’s police leadership has expressed deep sorrow following the killing of 17 officers during a terrorist attack in Yobe State, with Olatunji Disu describing the victims as brave personnel who died in service to the nation.

The officers were participating in advanced counter-terrorism training at a military facility in Buni Yadi when gunmen launched a coordinated overnight assault, breaching the camp from multiple directions and engaging security forces in a fierce exchange.

Authorities said the attack, which occurred in the early hours of May 8, also claimed the lives of some Nigerian Army personnel who were stationed at the training school.

In response, the police chief extended condolences to the families of the fallen officers, assuring them that their sacrifice would be honoured and remembered. He emphasised that the slain officers had demonstrated exceptional courage and commitment by undergoing specialised training aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.

A delegation led by the Yobe State Police Command visited the training facility to commiserate with military authorities and surviving trainees, while also encouraging them to remain resolute in completing their mission despite the loss.

The police leadership reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside the armed forces and other security agencies to pursue those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice, as efforts continue to contain insecurity in the region.
