Nigeria successfully defended the Unity Cup title with an emphatic victory over Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz at The Valley in London on Saturday.

Midfielder Alhassan Yusuf Abdullahi, who plays his club football in the United States, scored twice, while acting captain Terem Moffi also found the net as the Super Eagles delivered a dominant performance against their Caribbean opponents.

Nigeria made a dream start, taking the lead just four minutes into the contest. Abdullahi reacted fastest after Jamaica goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clarke could only punch away a long throw from Kenneth Igboke, pouncing on the loose ball to put the Super Eagles ahead.

The early breakthrough allowed Nigeria to settle into the game, with Eric Chelle’s side controlling possession and creating the better chances while keeping Jamaica’s attacking opportunities to a minimum.

Chelle retained faith in the team that defeated Zimbabwe in the semi-final, making only one alteration to his starting lineup as Rafiu Durosinmi replaced Philip Otele. The three-time African champions continued the impressive form that had carried them into the final.

Jamaica nearly found an equaliser in the eighth minute when Brown connected with a delivery from Kaheim Dixon, but goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo was alert and made the save.

Nigeria continued to press for a second goal and came close in the 35th minute, only for Durosinmi to be denied by a fine stop from Boyce-Clarke.

The Super Eagles eventually extended their advantage after the break when Terem Moffi rose highest to head home a well-delivered cross from Femi Azeez.

Azeez remained a constant threat throughout the encounter and almost added his own name to the scoresheet, but Boyce-Clarke once again produced a quality save to keep out his free-kick.

Nigeria completed the victory deep into stoppage time. Substitute Philip Otele provided the assist for Abdullahi, who finished confidently from a tight angle to score his second goal of the match and put the result beyond doubt.

The win ensured that Nigeria retained the Unity Cup crown, capping another encouraging tournament performance under head coach Eric Chelle.

The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to an international friendly against Poland at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw on June 3.
