The Nigeria Police Force has urged Nigerians to refrain from carrying out reprisal attacks against South African nationals, businesses, diplomatic missions and other South African interests in the country following reports of xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians in South Africa.

The warning comes amid rising concerns over the reported incidents and fears that public anger could trigger retaliatory actions capable of threatening peace and security within Nigeria.

Providing an update on the situation, the police revealed that security and intelligence agencies had reviewed developments during a Joint Intelligence Board meeting held on May 18, 2026, under the chairmanship of the National Security Adviser.

Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, said the Federal Government is actively engaging relevant authorities and stakeholders through diplomatic, intelligence and security channels with a view to resolving the matter peacefully and safeguarding the interests of Nigerians both at home and abroad.

While acknowledging the concerns expressed by citizens over the reported attacks, the police emphasised that no individual or group should take the law into their own hands or resort to self-help.

The Force warned that acts such as violence, intimidation, destruction of property, hate speech, reprisals or any conduct capable of undermining public peace and national security remain unlawful and would not be tolerated.

According to the statement, Nigeria operates under the rule of law, and every individual lawfully residing in the country, irrespective of nationality, is entitled to legal protection and security.

The police further stressed that any attempt to target South African citizens, diplomatic facilities, businesses or other legitimate South African interests within Nigeria would be treated as a criminal offence and dealt with accordingly.

The Force also appealed to members of the public to avoid circulating unverified, inflammatory or provocative information, particularly on social media, warning that such content could escalate tensions and frustrate ongoing diplomatic engagements.

To prevent any breakdown of law and order, the Nigeria Police Force said it has intensified collaboration with other security and intelligence agencies by strengthening surveillance and security around critical national assets, foreign missions and strategic locations across the country.

The statement added that adequate security personnel have been deployed to ensure the protection of lives and property.

Reaffirming its commitment to national security, the police assured Nigerians that it remains focused on maintaining public order, protecting lives and property and preserving peace across the country.

Citizens were urged to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding while going about their lawful activities without fear.
