The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), in partnership with Lagos State health officials and Port Health Services, has intensified screening and surveillance measures at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, amid growing concerns over the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The enhanced measures are aimed at preventing the importation of the deadly virus into Nigeria through international air travel and ensuring rapid detection of any suspected cases.

A joint inspection team comprising aviation and public health officials visited the airport to evaluate its preparedness, response capacity, and compliance with disease surveillance protocols. The exercise focused on assessing screening procedures, emergency response mechanisms, and coordination among relevant agencies.

Health authorities stressed the importance of heightened vigilance, particularly for passengers arriving from countries considered high-risk. Officials noted that robust monitoring systems are being maintained to identify, isolate, and manage any potential health threats before they can spread within the country.

The Lagos State Government commended the proactive steps already taken by airport authorities and emphasized the need for continuous collaboration between health and aviation stakeholders to safeguard public health.

Airport management reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strict preventive measures and ensuring that all personnel remain alert to signs of infectious diseases. Officials also highlighted the importance of immediate reporting and response whenever suspicious symptoms are detected among travelers.

As part of the preparedness strategy, authorities have reviewed emergency response plans, conducted fresh risk assessments, and strengthened coordination with airlines operating routes connected to affected regions. Passengers arriving from designated high-risk destinations are also subject to enhanced screening procedures.

FAAN and aviation regulators have continued to align their response efforts with international health standards while ensuring airport workers receive regular training on disease detection, reporting, and emergency response protocols.

The inspection of critical airport facilities underscored the determination of both health and aviation authorities to maintain a high level of readiness and prevent any potential Ebola outbreak from reaching Nigerian shores.
