The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has warned that it may embark on a nationwide strike if kidnapped teachers and schoolchildren across the country are not rescued without delay.

The warning was issued during a solidarity rally held in Abuja, where the union expressed growing concern over the increasing attacks on schools and the safety of education workers.

NUT President, Audu Amba, said the continued abduction of teachers and pupils, particularly in Oyo State, poses a serious threat to the nation’s education system. He urged federal and state governments to take urgent and decisive action to secure schools and protect both learners and educators.

According to the union, insecurity has disrupted academic activities in several communities and created fear among teachers, parents, and students. The NUT reaffirmed its directive for teachers in Oyo State public schools to remain on strike following the abduction of their colleagues and pupils.

The union stressed that schools must remain safe spaces for learning and warned that failure to secure the release of the victims could trigger industrial action across the country.

NUT called on security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and prevent further attacks on educational institutions nationwide.
