The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has introduced the Net Billing Regulations 2026, a new framework that allows qualified electricity consumers with solar power systems to earn credits by supplying excess electricity to distribution networks.

Under the scheme, customers who generate their own electricity through solar installations can export unused power to the grid and receive credits based on tariffs approved by NERC. The initiative is aimed at encouraging renewable energy adoption, improving energy security, expanding private sector participation in electricity generation, and reducing carbon emissions.

To participate, customers must be connected to a licensed distribution company, install approved renewable energy systems with capacities ranging from 50kWp to 1.5MWp, obtain Disco approval, sign a Net Billing Agreement, and register with NERC.

The commission said the programme will help businesses lower energy costs while contributing additional power to the national grid. NERC also reaffirmed its commitment to strict regulatory compliance across the electricity sector, warning operators that violations of industry regulations will not be tolerated.
