The Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation has called on Nigerian youths to demand clear climate and environmental commitments from political candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during the launch of the #Vote4Climate 2027 campaign to mark World Environment Day 2026, the organisation urged voters to assess candidates based on their plans for renewable energy, environmental protection, climate resilience, food security, and green job creation.

GIFSEP Executive Director, Michael David, said climate change is already affecting communities across Nigeria through flooding, desertification, pollution, food insecurity, and environmental degradation. He stressed that environmental issues should become a major consideration for voters rather than being overshadowed by ethnic or regional politics.

The group highlighted challenges such as the shrinking of Lake Chad, rising sea levels, recurring floods, and land degradation, warning that these threats continue to impact livelihoods, agriculture, public health, and economic development.

Also speaking, Richard Nzekwu called for greater investment in environmental restoration and youth-led climate initiatives, while GIFSEP board member Gloria Agema advocated stronger participation of women in climate governance and decision-making.

The campaign concluded with a call on citizens, civil society groups, journalists, and youth organisations to intensify advocacy for environmental accountability as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
