Security operatives in Kogi State have successfully repelled an attack by suspected bandits on Ikoyi community in Ijumu Local Government Area, preventing what authorities described as a major security incident.

According to the state government, the attackers stormed the community on Saturday evening with the alleged intention of carrying out abductions. A joint security team comprising the military, police, vigilante personnel, and local hunters responded swiftly after receiving distress calls and engaged the assailants in a gun battle.

The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, said the operation forced the attackers to flee into nearby forests, with intelligence reports suggesting that several of them sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange.

One member of the Tiv community lost his life in the crossfire, while another victim suffered injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Security agencies have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects, while residents have been urged to report anyone seeking treatment for suspicious gunshot wounds.

The state government credited the successful operation to cooperation among conventional security agencies, vigilante groups, and local hunters, describing it as evidence of the effectiveness of Kogi’s community-based security strategy.

Authorities also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state and called on residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting security efforts.
