Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of carrying out a drone attack on a facility linked to spent nuclear fuel storage near the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, describing the incident as a dangerous escalation despite no reported increase in radiation levels.

Ukrainian authorities said the strike damaged infrastructure associated with nuclear fuel handling and sparked a fire that was later extinguished by emergency responders. According to the country’s nuclear operator, no spent fuel was stored in the affected building at the time of the attack, and no casualties were recorded.

The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed it had been informed about the damage and plans to assess the site to verify safety conditions. Officials also reported that radiation readings remain within normal limits.

Zelenskyy said the attack involved a Shahed-type drone and warned that repeated strikes on sensitive infrastructure increase risks around nuclear facilities. The incident comes months after another reported drone attack damaged part of the protective structure covering the destroyed Chornobyl reactor.

The latest allegation adds to ongoing concerns over the safety of nuclear sites during the war, with both Ukraine and Russia continuing to accuse each other of actions that could endanger nuclear facilities, including the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power station.
