The Republican-led United States House of Representatives has approved a $70 billion funding package for immigration enforcement agencies, providing long-term financial support for border security operations during the remainder of President Donald Trump’s administration.

The bill, which allocates funding to both ICE and the Border Patrol, passed by a razor-thin 214-212 vote and now awaits the president’s signature to become law.

The legislation marks the end of months of political wrangling over immigration spending that contributed to a prolonged partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security earlier this year. Republican lawmakers pushed the measure through Congress using the budget reconciliation process, enabling them to avoid potential Democratic procedural roadblocks.

Supporters argue the package will strengthen immigration enforcement, improve border security operations, and provide agencies with the resources needed to address illegal crossings and related security concerns.

The measure received near-unanimous Republican backing, although one independent lawmaker, formerly aligned with the Republican Party, joined Democrats in opposing the bill.

Negotiations surrounding the legislation were at times contentious, with disagreements emerging over additional White House funding requests and proposed programmes linked to the administration’s broader policy agenda. Some of those proposals were ultimately removed or altered before final passage.

With both chambers of Congress now having approved the package, the legislation represents one of the administration’s most significant immigration policy victories and provides enforcement agencies with guaranteed funding through the end of Trump’s current term in office.
