Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on Nigerians to protect and strengthen democratic governance, warning against any actions that could weaken public trust in the country’s democratic system.

Speaking on behalf of the 10th National Assembly, Akpabio said Nigeria’s democratic journey reflects resilience and collective sacrifice since the June 12 democratic struggle, noting that despite its challenges, the country remains committed to constitutional rule.

He stressed that democracy should not be judged only by elections but by accountability, justice, transparency and service delivery that directly impact citizens’ lives.

Akpabio cautioned against what he described as anti-democratic forces attempting to exploit economic and security difficulties to erode confidence in democratic institutions. He insisted that democracy remains the most viable system for addressing Nigeria’s complex national challenges.

The Senate President also urged young Nigerians to take a more active role in politics and governance, saying the future of leadership rests on their engagement and participation in democratic processes rather than passive observation.

He further called for stronger cooperation between citizens and government in tackling insecurity, including terrorism, banditry and other violent crimes, describing collective action as essential to national stability.

According to him, Nigerians must recommit to democratic ideals such as freedom, accountability, justice and civic responsibility, which he said are fundamental to national development and progress.
