The biographical film Michael, based on the life of pop icon Michael Jackson, has officially become the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time after surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody at the global box office.

Industry figures show the Lionsgate-produced film has earned about $911.9 million worldwide, edging past the $903.6 million record previously held by the Freddie Mercury biopic.

Since its release in April, the movie has maintained strong momentum across global cinemas, with a significant boost coming from its recent debut in Japan. Even after its arrival on digital platforms, it has continued to perform strongly in theatres worldwide.

The film previously set records with a $218.8 million global opening weekend, including $97.2 million in North America, making it the biggest debut ever for a musical biopic.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson as the lead, the film traces Michael Jackson’s journey from his early days with The Jackson 5 to his rise as one of the most influential figures in global music history, while also exploring personal struggles and controversies.

The production features an ensemble cast including Nia Long, Miles Teller and Colman Domingo, and has already expanded into home release formats, with sequel development reportedly underway following its commercial success.
