Leaders attending the G7 Summit have welcomed what they described as a significant diplomatic agreement brokered by US President Donald Trump with Iran, viewing the development as a positive step toward reducing tensions and promoting stability in the Middle East.

Despite the focus on Iran, discussions quickly turned to growing concerns over China’s dominance in the global supply of critical minerals, which are essential for producing electronics, clean energy technologies, and defence equipment.

Several G7 leaders expressed concern that heavy reliance on Chinese-controlled mineral supplies could expose their economies to strategic and economic vulnerabilities. As a result, securing access to these resources has emerged as a key priority for the bloc.

Officials are reportedly considering measures aimed at reducing dependence on China, including expanding domestic mining capacity, investing in alternative mineral projects, and strengthening partnerships with resource-rich nations outside Beijing’s sphere of influence.

Trade ministers at the summit also explored coordinated strategies to build more resilient supply chains and ensure long-term access to materials considered vital for future economic growth and national security.
