Erling Haaland made a memorable entrance onto the FIFA World Cup stage, scoring twice to inspire Norway to an emphatic 4-1 win over Iraq in their opening Group I encounter.

Playing in his first-ever World Cup match, the Norwegian striker showcased the finishing ability that made him Europe’s leading scorer during qualification, helping his country begin their campaign on a high note after returning to the tournament for the first time in nearly three decades.

The breakthrough arrived in the 29th minute when Haaland slipped away from his defenders and converted a low delivery from David Moller Wolfe, giving Norway the lead.

Reflecting on the match, the Manchester City forward admitted there were nerves ahead of his tournament debut but expressed satisfaction with the result.

Iraq, making their first World Cup appearance in 40 years, responded positively and found an equaliser ten minutes later. Aymen Hussein rose highest to meet a cross from Amir Al Ammari, powering a header past the Norwegian defence to restore parity.

The Iraqi celebration was short-lived, however, as Haaland capitalised on a defensive mistake before halftime. Under pressure from a weak back pass, goalkeeper Jalal Hassan attempted a clearance that ricocheted off the striker and into the net, handing Norway a 2-1 advantage.

The goal added another milestone to Haaland’s remarkable international record, taking his tally to 57 goals in just 51 appearances for Norway.

Iraq continued to push forward and created several opportunities, but Norway gradually tightened their grip on the contest after the break.

The decisive third goal arrived in the 76th minute when substitute Leo Ostigard headed home to extend Norway’s lead and effectively end Iraq’s hopes of a comeback.

Deep into stoppage time, Iraq’s misfortune increased when captain Aymen Hussein inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net, completing a dominant 4-1 scoreline in Norway’s favour.

Despite the defeat, Iraq coach Graham Arnold praised his players’ effort and remained optimistic about their chances in the group, noting that costly mistakes ultimately proved decisive.

Norway will now turn their attention to a clash against Senegal in their next fixture, while Iraq prepare for a difficult meeting with France as they seek to revive their World Cup hopes.
