Governor Seyi Makinde has assured residents of Oyo State that every effort is being made to secure the safe release of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area, stressing that authorities are prioritising the victims’ safety throughout the rescue operation.

The governor gave the assurance in Ibadan while receiving protesters led by social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), who marched to the Government House demanding urgent action over the abduction.

Makinde explained that security agencies are carrying out a carefully coordinated operation aimed at rescuing the victims without endangering their lives. He noted that the state government is working closely with relevant security bodies and remains committed to bringing the captives home safely.

According to him, the rescue mission requires caution and strategic planning because the wellbeing of the abducted children and teachers remains the highest priority.

He assured parents and residents that the government would not relent until all those kidnapped are reunited with their families.

Earlier, VeryDarkMan led members of the Ratel Movement and concerned residents on a peaceful demonstration across parts of Ibadan, calling on authorities to intensify efforts to tackle insecurity and secure the immediate release of the victims.

Speaking during the protest, the activist said the demonstration was intended to amplify the concerns of affected families and draw attention to the growing threat posed by attacks on schools.

He urged both state and federal governments to strengthen security measures, warning that continued attacks on educational institutions endanger the future of children and undermine access to education.

The kidnapping occurred on May 15, 2026, in the Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area, triggering widespread concern among parents, community leaders, and civil society organisations.

Since the incident, calls have continued to mount for authorities to intensify rescue efforts and ensure the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers.
