Wimbledon fans will witness the return of one of tennis’ most iconic partnerships after Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams secured a wildcard entry into the women’s doubles event at this year’s Championships.

The announcement paves the way for the legendary duo to compete together at the All England Club for the first time in four years, reviving memories of a partnership that dominated the sport for decades.

Serena, winner of 23 Grand Slam singles titles and seven Wimbledon crowns, enjoyed tremendous doubles success alongside Venus, with the sisters capturing six Wimbledon doubles championships and establishing themselves as one of the greatest teams in tennis history.

The 44-year-old has been steadily working her way back into competitive tennis. She recently returned to action at the Queen’s Club Championships, where she teamed up with rising Canadian star Victoria Mboko. Their campaign was cut short after Mboko sustained a knee injury that forced her withdrawal from Wimbledon.

Ahead of the Championships, Serena is continuing her preparations at the Berlin Open, where she is partnering Czech player Karolina Muchova in doubles competition.

Her last Wimbledon appearance came in 2022 when she entered the tournament through a wildcard but was knocked out in the opening round by France’s Harmony Tan.

Wildcard entries are commonly awarded to players returning from injury, retirement, or lengthy absences and whose rankings no longer guarantee automatic qualification. Following Serena’s decision to return to professional tennis after stepping away from the sport four years ago, many expected Wimbledon organisers to offer her a place in the draw.

Tournament officials also handed men’s singles wildcards to former Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka and Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov, while two additional men’s wildcard spots remain available.

Among the players reportedly under consideration for those remaining places are Matteo Berrettini, Nick Kyrgios, Dan Evans, and Gael Monfils.

In the women’s singles category, French Open finalist Maja Chwalinska received a wildcard invitation, with organisers expected to announce another batch of entries later in the week.

British players Katie Boulter and Heather Watson were also granted entry into the doubles competition through a wildcard.

The return of Serena and Venus is already generating excitement ahead of Wimbledon, with supporters eager to watch the celebrated sisters reunite on one of tennis’ most prestigious stages.
