A female bystander has died after being struck by a petrol tanker that lost control and crashed into a roadside shop in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State, emergency officials say. The tragic incident occurred on Friday evening, prompting a multi-agency response from Lagos State emergency services.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the tanker was carrying about 15,000 litres of petroleum motor spirit (PMS) when it reportedly suffered a mechanical fault, ran over a woman and plunged into a nearby shop shortly before 8:00 p.m. The driver was not present at the scene when responders arrived.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said the agency activated its emergency response plan from the Igando Base after receiving distress calls. Crews from LASEMA, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps were dispatched to manage the scene and prevent further casualties.
Officials confirmed that the tanker first collided with a Toyota Corolla before crashing into the shop where the woman was struck and killed. A teenage girl who was trapped in the wreckage was rescued by emergency teams and transferred to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) for medical treatment and hospital transfer.
Traffic control measures were put in place by LASTMA to avert secondary accidents as response teams worked to clear the scene. The deceased woman’s remains were recovered and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further processing.
Local residents described the crash as shocking, saying the tanker veered off the road without warning. The cause of the mechanical fault is being investigated as authorities continue to review CCTV footage and gather witness accounts.
