The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced new guidelines allowing travellers to take selfie videos and photos at airports provided they respect the privacy and consent of other passengers, the authority said in a statement on Monday. The clarification comes amid questions about camera use at terminals and aims to balance passenger enjoyment with safety and privacy concerns.
FAAN said individuals are free to record selfie videos for personal use in public areas of airports such as departure lounges, arrival halls and walkways, as long as they do not intrude on the privacy of others. Travellers have been cautioned not to film other passengers without explicit permission, especially in situations where people are unaware they are being recorded.
The authority added that filming should never obstruct airport operations or interfere with security procedures. Cameras and mobile devices must be used responsibly so as not to disrupt fellow passengers or attract the attention of security personnel. Anyone found recording restricted areas or capturing images of others without their consent may be subjected to security intervention and possible sanctions in line with airport rules.
FAAN’s update reflects global airport practices that distinguish between tourist and personal photography and filming that could compromise safety, security or privacy. The authority said travellers should focus on capturing personal experiences such as moments with family and friends while respecting the rights of fellow passengers.
Airport officials say the guidelines are intended to reassure travellers who enjoy documenting their journeys that they can do so within clear and respectful boundaries. FAAN encouraged passengers to seek consent when others appear in their recordings and to comply with instructions from airport staff and security officers.
