Mexico City Mexico – calls to cancel or relocate the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches scheduled in Mexico have been circulating on social media after violent clashes erupted in parts of Mexico following the killing of a top cartel leader, though there is no official confirmation from FIFA or Mexican authorities that matches will be cancelled or moved, fact-checking reports say.
The unrest began after Mexican security forces killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), in a military operation in Jalisco State on February 22, 2026. Cartel members responded with violent attacks including burning vehicles, roadblocks and clashes with authorities across several states, prompting heightened security alerts and travel advisories.
The wave of violence has already affected scheduled sporting events in the country. Several professional soccer matches in Mexico were postponed after the clashes, including four games in the top leagues played near World Cup host cities, while transport systems and public events faced disruption.
On social platforms people have expressed concern about safety and suggested that matches set to take place at venues such as Estadio Akron in Guadalajara could be cancelled or shifted to other countries, including the United States and Canada. Some posts noted “growing calls” for canceling Mexico’s portion of the tournament because of the current security situation, but these posts were shared by unverified accounts and no formal decision has been made by FIFA.
According to reports, FIFA is closely monitoring the situation in Guadalajara and other host cities, but there has been no official announcement about moving or cancelling World Cup fixtures. Organisers and authorities continue to emphasise preparations for the tournament scheduled to kick off in June 2026, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Security forces remain on high alert as local governments work to restore calm and ensure that preparations for the event remain on track. Public safety and infrastructure protection continue to be priorities as the situation evolves.
