British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua has the full backing of his family as he prepares for a possible return to the ring later in 2026, even though relatives admit they feel deep concern about the risks of his comeback, according to family members and promoter comments.

Joshua, the former two-time world heavyweight champion, has been recovering from a serious car crash in Nigeria last December that claimed the lives of two of his close friends and members of his training team, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. The 36-year-old suffered minor injuries in that accident but has since expressed his intention to continue his boxing career.

Promoter Eddie Hearn said last week that Joshua’s return to training is progressing and that a comeback fight could be scheduled for July 2026, although a previously planned bout in March and a highly anticipated match against Tyson Fury were postponed as he focused on recovery and preparation.

Joshua’s uncle Adedamola Joshua told The PUNCH newspaper that while the family often feels fear and emotional stress whenever he fights, they are fully behind his decision to return. “We are proud of him … he makes the full decision and we have full respect for him whatever he decides,” the uncle said, adding that they will support him “fully” in whatever path he chooses.

Family members have described the emotional strain they experience watching Joshua compete and understand their fears stem from deep love and concern for his wellbeing. Still they emphasised their commitment to backing his decisions and career goals as he moves closer to re-entering competitive boxing.
