The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has selected former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the vice-presidential candidate to run alongside Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential election.

The party said Amaechi’s emergence followed extensive consultations involving party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and stakeholders from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Announcing the decision, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi explained that Amaechi was chosen after finishing as runner-up in the party’s presidential primary election.

According to the party, Amaechi’s political experience, national visibility and record in public service made him a strong choice for the ticket. Abdullahi described the Atiku-Amaechi pairing as a combination of two seasoned politicians with the capacity to tackle Nigeria’s economic, security and governance challenges.

He noted that Amaechi’s experience spans key positions, including Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation, giving him extensive exposure in both legislative and executive leadership.

The ADC also highlighted Amaechi’s political influence in the South-South region and other parts of the country, saying his inclusion strengthens the party’s nationwide appeal and electoral prospects.

The party said the ticket reflects a blend of governance experience, administrative competence and national reach, which it believes can provide Nigerians with a viable alternative in the 2027 elections.

ADC further called on its members, coalition partners, civil society organisations, youth groups and women associations to rally behind the ticket as it prepares its campaign ahead of the polls.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to addressing key national issues, including insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment and national cohesion.
