National Examinations Council says computer-based exams will start later this year as part of reforms to modernise testing, reduce malpractice, and widen international operations.

Education Minister Tunji Alausa said the shift to CBE will enable real-time monitoring and detection of irregularities, while aligning assessments with skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and digital literacy.

At the 25th anniversary event in Abuja, the government described NECO as a key national exam body focused on credible certification, timely results, and improved transparency through technology.

NECO Registrar Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi said the council has moved from early trust and infrastructure challenges to becoming a recognised examination body, now running exams in eight countries.

He added that digital processes like online registration and electronic result systems have improved speed, access, and confidence in the system, while ongoing reforms aim to strengthen standards and global acceptance.
